The short version. Your sailing data lives in your iCloud account — not an axiotrax server. We do not sell, rent, or trade your data, and we do not use it to train AI models. When a partner entrusts us with data under a privacy covenant, we honor that covenant to the letter — including any restriction on sharing with AI or large language models (LLMs). What follows is the long version.
This Privacy Policy explains how axiotrax LLC, a Minnesota limited liability company ("axiotrax," "we," or "us"), handles information in connection with the axiotrax iOS application and website (collectively, the "App"). It should be read alongside our End User License Agreement. If anything here conflicts with a written agreement we have with a partner, the stricter privacy protection controls.
axiotrax is built on a simple architecture decision: your data resides in your own cloud, not ours. Sailing sessions, GPS tracks, sailor and crew profiles, boat setup, coaching conversations, and notes are stored locally on your device and — where you enable iCloud — in your private Apple iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit infrastructure.
axiotrax does not operate a central cloud that holds your sailing data. We cannot see your tracks, we do not warehouse them, and we do not back them up on our own servers. Your data lives on hardware and accounts that you control, under Apple's privacy protections and your Apple ID. When you delete a session, or delete the App and your iCloud data, it is gone from the system — there is no shadow copy sitting on an axiotrax server.
Some data reaches axiotrax through partners — for example, sailing organizations, event organizers, equipment makers, clubs, or other providers who share data with us under an agreement. Those agreements frequently carry privacy covenants: binding restrictions on how that data may be used, stored, disclosed, or processed.
axiotrax rigorously respects every privacy covenant placed on us by a partner agreement. These covenants include, but are not limited to, restrictions on sharing data with AI systems and large language models (LLMs). Where a partner covenant limits or prohibits AI/LLM processing of covered data, axiotrax will not route that data to any AI or LLM service — full stop — regardless of any feature that might otherwise use it. We treat a covenant restriction as a hard technical boundary, not a preference.
If we cannot honor a covenant while delivering a given feature, we withhold the feature for that data rather than compromise the covenant.
axiotrax includes an AI coaching feature ("SmartCoach"). We apply best-practice AI privacy standards to it:
When you use SmartCoach, the relevant session data and conversation content are transmitted to our AI provider (currently Anthropic) solely to generate your coaching response. This processing is governed by the provider's terms, which do not permit using your content to train their models. axiotrax does not retain a separate copy of that content on its own servers.
Because your data lives in your iCloud, axiotrax collects very little. The following is stored on your device and in your private iCloud account, not on axiotrax servers:
Location data is accessed to record sessions and is stored locally and in your private iCloud account; it is not transmitted to axiotrax servers. Apple HealthKit data (such as Apple Watch workouts) may be read solely to import sailing activity and is never shared with third parties. If you connect a Garmin watch, axiotrax imports your activities directly from your Garmin account through the Garmin Connect API, solely to bring those sessions into the App.
If you contact us for support or join a waitlist through our website, we receive the information you choose to provide (such as your email address) so we can respond to you. We do not need — and do not want — a copy of your sailing data to support you.
axiotrax does not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share your personal data with third parties for advertising, marketing, data brokerage, or any similar purpose. We do not build advertising profiles, and we do not monetize your sailing data. The only parties that ever receive your data are (a) Apple, as the operator of the iCloud/CloudKit account you control; (b) an AI provider, only when you use SmartCoach and only to answer your request; and (c) people you deliberately share with, such as crew or a cohort you choose.
axiotrax lets you share a session with crew, compare tracks boat-to-boat, or benchmark against a small curated "cohort" of boats you choose. This sharing is designed around the same principle: each sailor's data stays in that sailor's own iCloud.
You are responsible for having appropriate consent before sharing data that includes information about other people (for example, crew names).
axiotrax relies on a small number of third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy:
We are not responsible for the practices of third-party services, and we encourage you to review their policies. Where a partner covenant is stricter than a third party's default terms, the covenant governs how we handle the covered data.
Because your data lives in your iCloud account, it is protected by Apple's security and encryption, tied to your Apple ID and device. Data sent to an AI provider for coaching is transmitted over encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, but keeping your data in your own cloud — rather than a central axiotrax honeypot — is itself a deliberate security and privacy choice.
axiotrax is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will address it.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App or this website, and the effective date above will be updated. Your continued use of the App after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
