Any Garmin watch that records GPS activities in FIT format is compatible — which is essentially all modern Garmin devices. This includes the Quatix series (Garmin's flagship marine watch), Fenix, Epix, MARQ, Forerunner, and Instinct lines. The Sailing and Regatta activity modes are fully supported. If your watch has GPS and exports FIT files, it works.

No. axiotrax reads FIT files directly — you don't need a Garmin Connect account or subscription of any kind. Just export the FIT file from your watch (via USB, the Garmin Connect app, or AirDrop from a computer) and import it into axiotrax.

axiotrax primarily targets Garmin FIT files, but it can also work with standard GPS data formats from other devices and apps. There may be one extra conversion step depending on your source format. Reach out via the contact form below and we'll walk you through it.

SmartCourse analyzes the geometric patterns in your GPS track that are unique to sailboat racing — the characteristic tacking angles on a beat, the gybing pattern of a run, the speed and heading signature of a rounding. From these patterns it estimates wind direction, then maps the geometry onto the course type you've selected to place start, windward, leeward, and finish marks.

No sensors, beacons, or manual mark placement required. If the auto-detected finish isn't quite right, you can override it using the custom finish control in the full-screen map view.

axiotrax supports Windward/Leeward (5M and 3M), Olympic Triangle, Trapezoid, and Random Leg. The Random Leg type is for non-standard or pursuit-style courses — it disables auto-finish detection and can optionally use API wind data to enable VMG and tack/gybe analysis.

The pre-start window defines how many minutes before your recorded start time axiotrax considers "pre-race." GPS points in this window are used for start-line detection and excluded from race statistics like average speed and VMG. Set it to match how early you typically start your watch — usually 5–12 minutes before gun. You can adjust this per-activity in the race settings gear sheet.

axiotrax automatically fetches hourly wind speed and direction from Open-Meteo — a free, no-account weather API — using your activity's GPS location and time. Two samples are pulled: one near the start of your session and one near the end. This data is cached on the activity so it's available offline afterward.

If the RC announced a wind bearing before the start, you can enter it in the race settings gear sheet as the RC Wind Bearing. That value takes priority over API data for all SmartCourse calculations, while API data remains visible for reference.

All your activity data — GPS tracks, race analysis, settings — is stored locally on your iPhone or iPad. axiotrax does not upload your GPS data to any server. The only external network requests axiotrax makes are to fetch weather data from Open-Meteo (using approximate location and timestamp only, no personal data), and only when you're viewing an activity for the first time.

No. axiotrax works fully offline. An internet connection is only used the first time you view an activity, to fetch wind data from Open-Meteo. Once fetched, wind data is saved to the activity and the app works entirely without network access.

Open the full-screen map view, scrub the playback slider to the exact moment you crossed the finish line, and tap the flag icon. The finish mark moves to your GPS position at that moment and is saved to the activity. To revert to automatic detection, tap the orange flag icon again.

On the activity detail screen, tap the video picker to select sailing footage from your Photos library. axiotrax automatically syncs the GPS track to your video using FIT file timestamps — no manual alignment needed. Tap Render and the overlaid video exports directly to your Photos library. The whole process takes seconds.

Cruise Mode, set in the global app Settings, simplifies the interface by hiding racing-specific data (VMG, race legs, SmartCourse analysis) and showing only speed, compass, distance, and track map. It's designed for day sails, deliveries, and any non-race activity where you still want to capture and replay your route.
