How to use the axiotrax display on the water: the three buttons, the pages, and what the screen is telling you.

How it works

The display shows numbers your phone works out. axiotrax does all the calculations, sends the result over Bluetooth, and the display draws it. That means the display never needs setting up for a race and never needs a new version to learn a new number: when the app changes what it shows, the display follows.

The screen is reflective, so it gets easier to read the brighter the sun is, and it draws almost no power to hold a picture. There is no backlight.

The three buttons

Every button acts when you let go, not when you press. While you hold a button the screen tells you what letting go will do, so you can keep holding to move on to the next action or to back out.

ButtonTapHold
POWER Switches the display on when it is off. Switches it off.
ACTION Next page. 2 seconds: sleep. 10 seconds: a setup screen you will not normally need. Keep holding to 15 seconds to cancel.
SEQUENCE Pings the end of the start line you are at. 1 second: starts the countdown. 4 seconds or more: cancels.

SEQUENCE works before the gun only. It is the start-line button, and the line stops being useful at the start. It works from any page, so you never have to find the start page first.

Pairing it with your phone

You do this once. After that the display and the app find each other on their own.

1

Switch the display on. Tap POWER. A new display shows a QR code, with its four-digit number underneath.

2

Scan it. In axiotrax go to Settings → Remote Display, tap Scan the QR Code and point your phone at the screen.

3

That’s it. The app pairs with the display in your hand — not the one on the next boat or the next desk — and from then on connects to it by itself. The display shows its number each time it starts, and Settings shows the same number.

No camera handy, or a display on older firmware with no code to scan? Give the scanner a few seconds and it offers List nearby displays: tap the number you can read on your own screen.

What needs Pro: pairing a display and reading it are free. Sending it live numbers needs axiotrax Pro.

Passing a display on

Selling one, buying one second-hand, or handing out displays after a build day? Hold ACTION and SEQUENCE together. The screen says RESET?; keep holding until it says RESET (five seconds), then let go. The display gets a new number, forgets its pages and shows a fresh QR code for the next owner. The phone it was paired with won’t find it again — that phone doesn’t need to be anywhere near. Let go early and nothing happens; hold past fifteen seconds and it cancels.

Reading the screen

The status bar

The thin bar across the top carries four things, left to right:

When a number goes gray

The display only shows what it has been told recently. If a value stops arriving, the number is struck through after 3 seconds, and replaced with dashes after 9. Dashes also mean the value is not available at all, for example distance to the line before the line has been pinged. A struck-through number is old, so do not race off it.

Course or heading

The direction tile reads COG, course over ground from GPS. If you have a compass on the boat's instrument network, it reads Heading · True instead.

Lift and knock

Lift/knock tells you whether the wind is letting you point higher than usual (a lift) or forcing you lower (a knock), signed the way marine instruments sign it. It is measured against the committee's wind direction when you enter one in the app. Without it, the app works out the wind during the pre-start, and the label reads LIFT/KNOCK EST so you know it is an estimate.

The pages

The display follows your race on its own. It shows a start page while the countdown runs and moves to a racing page at the gun. ACTION takes you to any other page whenever you like. After the gun, the start pages drop out of the rotation.

Before the start

WhenThe start page shows
No line pinged Countdown, course and speed.
Both ends pinged A drawing of the line with your boat on it, its bow on the line where the distance is measured, plus countdown, speed, distance to the line and course. One ACTION press away is a numbers page with countdown, distance to the line and speed.

Prefer just one of them? Choose Both, Graphic or Numbers at Settings → Remote Display → Start Screen.

Racing

At the gun the display goes to Upwind if you have entered the committee's wind direction, and to Course & speed if you have not, since there is nothing to measure lift and knock against. The rest are one or more ACTION presses away. Each page trades information for size: fewer numbers, bigger digits.

Running a start from the display

1

Start the timer at the warning signal. Hold SEQUENCE as the horn sounds and let go once the screen says GUN. The countdown length comes from the app, and it starts from when your thumb went down, not when you let go.

2

Ping the pin. Sail up to the pin and tap SEQUENCE. The first ping is always taken as the pin.

3

Ping the committee boat. Tap SEQUENCE again at the committee boat. The display switches to the drawing of the line by itself.

4

Race. At the gun the display moves to your racing page.

Pin first, every time. The display cannot tell the two ends apart, so it goes by order. Reversed ends flip the line, and the drawing and distance to the line will put you on the wrong side of it. A ping within 30 m of an end you have already set corrects that end, so pinging the same end twice is a safe way to fix a bad ping. Holding SEQUENCE again during a countdown restarts it, for a general recall.

Sleep, power and charging

Asleep or off?

With no phone connected for two hours, the display goes to sleep and the screen reads ASLEEPPRESS ACTION TO WAKE. You can also send it to sleep by holding ACTION for 2 seconds. To wake it, press ACTION or SEQUENCE.

POWER does not wake a sleeping display. It is already on, so a tap does nothing, and a hold switches it off. If the screen is completely blank the display is off, and a tap on POWER switches it on.

Charging

Charge it over the USB-C port. With the display awake and plugged in, the battery icon starts blinking after about three minutes and stops once the cell is full. The display cannot sense a charger directly, so it works it out from the battery voltage rising, which is why the blink takes a few minutes to start. The start-up screen shows the battery level as a percentage.

Settings in the app

Everything about the display is set at Settings → Remote Display.

When the screen says no

The screen showsWhat it means
NOT LINKEDNOTHING WAS RECORDED You pressed SEQUENCE with no phone connected, so nothing happened. Check the signal bars.
NOT NOWTHE START HAS PASSED You pressed SEQUENCE while racing. Pings and the timer are locked out after the gun.
NOT READYTHE APP HAS NOT SAID YET The display is connected but the app has not told it whether SEQUENCE is live. Please let us know if you see this.

The screen stays blank after switching on

Holding SEQUENCE while you switch the display on starts it in programming mode, which looks completely dead. Hold POWER to switch it off, then tap POWER to switch it back on with your hands clear of the other buttons.

Updating the firmware

When Settings → Remote Display → Firmware says an update is available, install it from a computer using the device page. It needs Chrome or Edge and a USB-C cable that carries data.
