Build the axiotrax display.

Everything you need to make one: the full build on video, the parts, the case files, and the firmware, which installs from your browser. No soldering.

  • ~$55 in parts
  • No soldering
  • Free case files & firmware

Watch the build

The whole build, start to finish: printing the case, fitting the window and the film, sealing it, and putting it together. Watch it once before you order anything.

What you need

The board is most of it — the display and the battery are already on it. The rest is a window, a vent, a sealant and a printed case.

Parts

PartWhat it’s forApprox.
Waveshare ESP32-S3-RLCD-4.2 The board: the 4.2″ reflective display and the battery are already on it $40
Quarter-wave polarizer film Sits with the window, so the panel reads through polarized sunglasses. Cut to the same 93.2 × 69.7 mm. One sheet does 4–10 $7
Polycarbonate sheet, 1 mm The clear front window over the panel. Cut to 93.2 × 69.7 mm pack
Breathable membrane vents Let the sealed case breathe without letting water in pack
Amazing GOOP Marine Bonds and seals the window into the case tube
One unit Buying every part from scratch — filament not included ~$55
Each, building ten The film, sheet, vents and sealant go much further than one unit ~$42

Printing

ItemNotes
Print files (R25) Ready-to-print Bambu Studio plates — single or two-color — plus STLs for any other slicer. The README inside has the print settings free
ASA filament The rigid parts: case, cradle, back cover and sun cover, all on one plate. Holds up to sun and heat in a cockpit. Not PLA — it softens in the sun spool
TPU filament The flexible parts: button pad, USB plug, display gasket, window gasket and four post caps spool
Bambu Lab P2S What we print on. ASA prints best in an enclosed printer like this one

Print settings

The film, the polycarbonate, the vents and the sealant all come in more than one unit needs, which makes a fleet cheaper per boat than a single build.

Product links are Amazon affiliate links — if you buy through them we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Buy anywhere you like; nothing about the build depends on where the parts came from.

The build, in six steps

  1. Print the parts from the print files: the case, cradle, back cover and sun cover in ASA; the button pad, USB plug, gaskets and post caps in TPU.
  2. Cut the window — the polycarbonate and the polarizer film, both 93.2 × 69.7 mm, protective films peeled off.
  3. Put it together — window and film in the window gasket, the board, the vent, sealed with GOOP. The video above shows every step.
  4. Install the firmware from your browser on a computer — the installer is on the device page.
  5. Pair it: in axiotrax open Settings → Remote Display, tap Scan the QR Code and point your phone at the panel.
  6. Mount it on the mast — the mast brackets are free to axiotrax sailors.

Already built one? The Device Guide covers the buttons, the pages and running a start from the display.

Want the CAD, not just the STLs

The print files are ready to print and free to anyone. The source CAD is a different thing: if you want to change the mount, fit it to a different panel, or design a version for your own boat, you need the model rather than the mesh.

We will hand those over, free, to people doing something real with them — builders, coaches, sailing programs, clubs, anyone teaching this. Send us a note saying who you are and what you have in mind. That is the whole application process; we just like knowing where these end up.
